  2. 4 cups water
  3. 1 large onion
  4. 1/4 cup dry or fresh coconut grated or sliced
  5. 4 cloves
  6. 1 bay leaf
  7. 2 red dry chilles
  8. 1 teaspoon coriander seeds
  9. 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  10. 4-5 garlic cloves
  11. 1/2 inch ginger piece
  12. as per need Some fresh coriander leaves
  13. As per taste Salt
  14. 2 tablespoon oil
  15. 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  16. 1 teaspoon Red Chilli powder
  17. 2-3 cups hot water for gravy

Steps to make to make Crab curry

  1. These are live crabs that I have washed under tap water.
  2. Then add some hot water and keep them covered in a vessel with the water in it.
    Alternately you can boil the crabs in water directly.
  3. In the meanwhile, let's prepare the masala.
    In a pan add onions, and saute without oil.
    Add the chilles, coconut, coriander and cumin, cloves and bay leaf.
    Till coconut is nice and brown
  4. Let this mixture cool a bit and then add garlic, ginger, coriander leaves and grind into a fine paste.
  5. Now, as the crabs have cooled a bit, pull the claws and keep the legs seperately. Now grind only the legs in a mixer along with some water.
    Strain and keep aside.
  6. Now in a pan, heat oil.add the gravy paste and turmeric powder, red chilli powder and salt. Saute for a minute and add the crab, claws, and strained crab legs paste.
  7. Give this a mix. Add some hot water to adjust the consistency of gravy. Let it boil and serve hot with bhaakris or steamed rice.
  8. Tip: We always purchase the live crabs and then twist and pull the claws and cook. And this is a real task.
